Benedict O’Looney

Presentation on how local people have been involved in protecting the local heritage.

Minutes:

Benny O’Looney, spoke about some of the architectural history of Peckham and the characteristics of different buildings from different era. Conservation areas had been designated in areas in the centre of Peckham to preserve the historic character of the area and ensure developments in the future were of a particular quality. Benny explained that the beginnings of a neighbourhood could be seen in the 18th century at that Peckham began very much as a village on the outskirts of London. As Transport links developed in the 19th century Peckham ceased to be a village and developed into a shopping district in the 20th century.

The Peckham Society was working to breathe new life into the historic buildings in Peckham such as the waiting room at Peckham Rye station and had created a community interest group in the hope of creating a community space for residents to use.
