Civic Awards

Minutes:

The following community announcements were made.

 

Civic awards – the chair invited Kenneth Hayes to explain about the  civic awards and application process. The association was formed in 1995 to promote the civic acts of people in Southwark.  Kenneth invited people to make nominations using the forms provided at the meeting or to complete online. There were different awards available such as a letter of commendation for 5 years active in the community or the Southwark life time award for 20 years active. Kenneth explained that for some of the awards the length of time involved in civic life were being waived in order to recognise those who carried out exemplary acts during the disturbances in the summer. The closing date for applications was 31 January 2012.

 

Adam Walker - the curator of the Through the Peckham Glass exhibition spoke about a sculpture he was commissioned to complete which was inspired by the Surrey Canal. The sculpture had been on display at Whittles Timber Yard. Adam wanted to build a strong sculpture using wood which would have been transported along the canal in the past which would sit in a non-traditional art space. Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 - Southwark will be marking this day  by an event hosted by the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE at The Imperial War Museum on Friday 27 January 2012 from 10 am which  will include a programme of music, testimony, poetry, and film.  People can book by contacting Sonia Sutton on 020 7525 7303 or emailing Sonia.Sutton@southwark.gov.uk.

Council Assembly – would be taking place on 25 January with a themed debate on environment.

 

Link Leadership group –  LINk Southwark is a local involvement network made up of local organisations and Southwark residents to improve health and social care services.

 

LINk are looking for people to join the Southwark Leadership group - to ensure that LINk represents the views of Southwark residents / organisations on health and adult social care.

Peckham settlement – would be hosting a skills market on Tuesday 24 January where local people could find out about local activities and volunteering.

 

Nicholas from people empowering people – spoke about a project to provide bikes for young people on estates in Peckham. The project had been successful in the Friary estate and the group were hoping to secure further funding to provide more bike workshops. Nicholas explained that the metropolitan police had kindly donates 20 mountain bikes. Nicholas also brought some books to the meeting which he was looking to donate to local community organisations.

 

The chair thanked Carly Henry, local florist for donating the Christmas tree at Peckham.

 

Linda Upton from Livesey SNT announced that there was a new borough commander Chief Superintendent Charlie Griggs.
