Community announcements and events

  • Library service review, information for community councils: The Council conducting a review of library services.

 

  • Southwark Community Games and youth related initiatives.

 

  • The second phase of the Democracy Commission, which started in May 2011, involves a review of the eight community councils this will include:

 

  1. Looking at ways to make savings.
  2. Discussing what community councils currently do and how this could be improved.
  3. Identifying what residents particularly value about community councils.

 

The Democracy Commission is seeking the views of local people as part of this review of community councils.  Residents are encouraged to:

Fill in the questionnaires provided and hand them to officers at the meeting or email your views directly to the Democracy Commission at democracy@southwark.gov.uk  by Monday, 29 August 2011. 

 

  • The next themed debate at council assembly on Wednesday 6 July 2011 is sport and young people. This will provide an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions.  Please refer to the website: www.southwark.gov.uk for details.

 

  • Local Implementation plan - Transport Improvements for 2012 – 2013 in the Camberwell Community Council area.

The following community announcements were made:

 

Review of Library Service

 

Pam Usher, Library Services Manager talked about the review of public libraries in the borough and asked residents how they would like to make savings under the current budget.  For example, could savings be made with the home library service? 

 

Pam asked residents to complete the survey which were available at the meeting iso they could give their opinions and choose the various options to make savings and improve the library service.  Pam also pointed out there was an online survey on the council’s website for people to complete.

 

There were workshops held at Peckham Library from the 8 – 28 July 2011 and Camberwell Library on 27 June 2011.  A further report that is scheduled to go to the council’s cabinet meeting would be produced later in September 2011.

 

Councillor Veronica Ward urged people to fill in the survey form because it is such an important issue.  Other sections of the survey asked for people’s views on the closure of homework clubs and volunteering.

 

Southwark Community Games

 

Paul Tucker, representing Southwark Community Games spoke his role and what the project has to offer.  Although there has been a reduction in staff they were able to get 200 local children in Southwark to participate in the London Youth Games along with other schools.  They work in partnership with Fusion and were involved in an event called Southwark Get Set in Camberwell so the children could race against each other.  There are other events like the multi sport coaching sessions for 8 – 16 years which are free and mini events that are scheduled to take place in local parks.

Democracy Commission

 

Abdullahi Mohamed Ibrahim, Neighbourhood Coordinator for Camberwell introduced himself to the meeting and spoke about the second phase of the Democracy Commission, which started in May 2011.  This is a review of the eight community councils which involves looking at ways to make savings, how they could be improved and what residents value about community councils.  The Democracy Commission were seeking the views of residents who were encouraged to complete the questionnaire form handed out at the meeting.  Further information would be given at the next community council.

 

Social Care and Adult Care

 

Russell Collins, Health and Community Services in Adult Social Care mentioned there were workshops and training sessions available for people interested in  attending these courses.  Those that were interested should speak to him during the break.

 

 

 

 

Council Assembly 6 July 2011

 

The themed debate at council assembly on 6 July 2011 was about sport and young people.  This gave people the opportunity to voice their opinions and it was the first meeting being outside Peckham Town Hall.
