Public Question Time

This is an opportunity for questions to be addressed to the chair.

Residents or persons working in the borough may ask questions on any matter in relation to which the council has powers or duties. Responses may be supplied in writing following the meeting.

Minutes:

The following public questions were raised at the meeting:

Q1  In response to a public question about the provision of public toilets in the development plans for the Elephant & Castle shopping centre, Councillor Peter John said he would look into that issue as the development plans went through the planning process. The planning application had yet to be submitted and he would look out for what provision was planned for shoppers who needed to use a toilet.

Q2  In response to a question about an underground train station in Camberwell, the chair responded that local councillors were in agreement that there should be an underground line in Camberwell. He added that the Bakerloo line should be extended to come to Camberwell and Peckham but under the government’s approach there was currently no money available for that to happen.

Q3    In response to a question about what was the council’s approach to dealing with anti-social behaviour by tenants, Councillor Peter John said anyone affected should contact their housing officer. The council did take it seriously and occasionally people were evicted for reason of anti-social behaviour. The council also had a noise nuisance team.

The chair read out a couple of written questions (Q4 and Q5) that had been submitted in writing:

Q4    “What is the status of Southwark’s Streetleader scheme and are the council committed to this.”

The chair explained that an officer response would be sought ahead of the next meeting.

Q5  “Now that Windsor Walk is permanently blocked off at the Champion Park end, should the Grove Lane end include a cul-de-sac sign.”

Councillor Ian Wingfield explained that it was due to bridge works required by Network Rail. The temporary closure was likely to last a couple of years. He added that he did not think a cul-de-sac sign was a good idea.

Q6  In response to an enquiry about a Camberwell over ground station, the chair explained that Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London had been very positive about re-opening the old station. They would need to take over the franchise in order to do that.

Councillor Ian Wingfield added that Mike Brown, TfL commissioner, had recently visited the site with Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, and had been positive about the prospect.
