Minutes:

Petition request from local residents about improving cycle safety on the junction of Denmark Hill and Orpheus Street.

RESOLVED:

That the petition be received.

The spokesperson for the petition explained that the petition, signed by 276 residents, asked for the council to improve the safety at the junction of Denmark Hill and Orpheus Street in Camberwell, either by the addition of a bicycle box at the nearby traffic lights, or with a road warning sign.

The spokesperson had been knocked off their bicycle by a lorry in 2014 and another cyclist had been killed in May 2015, both at the same junction.

Councillor Mark Williams thanked the petitioner for raising awareness of the issue and said that the community council wanted to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians. There had been a lengthy consultation process on the planned new junction at Camberwell Green. It had reached a logjam with Transport for London (TfL).The council was working to find a resolution soon and there would be a fuller  update on the junction at the next meeting of the community council in March 2016. Various safety measures were being looked at to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.
